Casting
This was a project where I learned how to cast my hand. I learned this skill in my Crafts in Costumes and Props class taught by Mike Helms. Our assignment was to create our own version of “Thing” from The Addams Family Musical.

Holding my hand in the alginate to create an exact copy.

After letting the alginate set, we added plaster to the mold. Here is when I started peeling the alginate off

An exact copy of my hand made of plaster.

Hand super glued to a wooden base with the first coat of paint.

Taking my hand back to my apartment on the bus.

While traveling, the pinky broke off, and I needed to fix it with super glue.

Added a finishing touch of nail polish to make my "Thing" a little more personal.

All paint coats added to the hand.

Added sutures, made out of leather cording, to the pinky break line.
‘Family Portrait’ of all of the classes' “Things.”
Molding
This project taught me how to mold something over something else, such as my arm. I learned this skill in my Crafts in Costumes and Props class taught by Mike Helms. Our assignment was to create an arm bracer from an existing character. I chose to create my bracer based on Ahsoka Tano’s arm bracers from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Paper pattern for the bracer.

A model of my wrist made out of saran wrap, duct tape, and polyurethane foam.

Duct tape pattern of the knuckle guard.

Initial bracer shape cut out of Wonderflex.

Close-up of the stitching for the fabric glove that serves as a base for the bracer.

Bracer with the second layer of Wonderflex for details.

Both the knuckle guard and the wrist bracer after final paint job.

Painted knuckle guard attached to the glove base.

Completed arm bracer while worn.
